The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is a pivotal milestone for aspiring solicitors in England and Wales.

Today, March 11, 2025, marks the release of the January 2025 SQE1 results, a significant event for many candidates.

As the SRA advises, as candidates access their results, it's essential to understand the next steps, regardless of the outcome.

Accessing Your Results

Candidates will receive an email notification with a link to their candidate account, where they can view their results.

The results are presented as scaled scores, accompanied by a detailed breakdown by practice area.

This breakdown offers valuable insights into performance across different legal domains, helping candidates identify strengths and areas for improvement.

Understanding Scaled Scores

The SQE1 utilizes scaled scoring to ensure fairness and consistency across different exam versions.

This method adjusts raw scores to account for varying difficulty levels, providing an equitable assessment of all candidates.

A detailed explanation of scaled scoring and its implications can be found on the SRA's official website.

Next Steps for Successful Candidates

For those who have passed SQE1, the journey continues towards SQE2.

Candidates who completed the April SQE2 seat reservation form, sent on January 28, should promptly log in to their candidate account to complete pre-booking steps.

It's crucial to adhere to the following timeline:

  • March 13-17: Emails requesting payment will be sent. Candidates must complete the payment within 48 hours to confirm their seat; failure to do so will result in cancellation.

Candidates with reasonable adjustments will receive tailored communication regarding their booking and payment processes.

Options for Unsuccessful Candidates

Candidates who did not pass SQE1 should not be disheartened. The next SQE1 sitting is scheduled for July 2025. To prepare for a resit, candidates should:

  • Review Performance: Utilize the detailed breakdown in the results to identify areas needing improvement.

  • Develop a Study Plan: Focus on weaker areas and consider engaging in study groups or seeking mentorship.

  • Stay Informed: Regularly check the SRA website for updates on booking dates and preparation resources.

Financial Considerations

Candidates should be aware of upcoming fee increases.

Effective from September 2025, SQE fees will rise to £1,934 for SQE1 and £2,974 for SQE2, totaling £4,908.

This 2.3% increase aligns with contractual agreements between the SRA and the exam provider, Kaplan.

Preparing for SQE2

SQE2 assesses practical legal skills, including advocacy, client interviewing, and legal drafting. Candidates should:

  • Engage in Practical Training: Participate in workshops or clinics that offer hands-on experience.

  • Seek Feedback: Regularly consult with mentors or peers to refine skills.

  • Utilize Official Resources: The SRA provides materials outlining the competencies tested in SQE2.

Conclusion

The release of the January 2025 SQE1 results is a significant juncture for all candidates.

Whether advancing to SQE2 or preparing for a retake, it's essential to stay informed, utilize available resources, and maintain a proactive approach.

The journey to becoming a solicitor is demanding, but with dedication and strategic planning, success is within reach.
